Washington Summer Scholars is offered in participation with American University

Classes meet Monday through Friday, with weekends used for field trips, excursions, leadership workshops and class preparation.

Choose from one of the following 3-credit courses:

  • US Politics
  • Criminal Justice & Forensics
  • U.S. Foreign Policy
  • Journalism & Media

Earn 3 College Credits
Washington Summer Scholars is accredited by American University. Three college credits are included in the tuition for this program.

Experience college life and take a 3-credit course as a WASHINGTON SUMMER SCHOLAR.
The Washington Summer Scholars conference invites select high school students to challenge themselves by taking a college-level, 3-credit course at American University in Washington, DC. It’s an exciting way to prepare for college life, with rigorous and rewarding courses of study designed to help you excel inside and outside the classroom.

Choose from one of four disciplines.
You can complete your course of study in U.S. Politics, Criminal Justice & Forensics, U.S. Foreign Policy, or Journalism & Media. Each course is designed to teach you study skills and research techniques that will serve you throughout your academic and professional life. All four courses follow American University’s renowned Washington Semester college format, which couples academic study which real-life experience. And what better place to explore your area of interest than the nation’s capital?

Live on campus and study with American University faculty.
For three weeks, you’ll live on campus just as a college student would. As a student of American University professors, you’ll learn invaluable lessons about preparing for college life and completing college-level coursework. You’ll emerge from the program with new friends and new knowledge of what the academic world expects in the areas of collegiate reading, writing, and research assignments. Courses are graded by American University faculty.

  • Live on American University’s Tenley Campus
  • Study under the guidance of American University faculty
  • Visit Capitol Hill
  • Discuss issues at a Congressional Appointment at your Senator’s and/or Representative’s office*
  • Visit Washington monuments including Lincoln, Jefferson, WWII, Iwo Jima, Vietnam, and FDR
  • Tour the Smithsonian Institution and the Library of Congress
  • Visit the Supreme Court
  • Earn 3 college credits

*Congressional Appointments may vary and are subject to member availability and scheduled recesses.
