in a Standardized Patient Clinical
Encounter Workshop at Boston
College School of Medicine.
The workshop is part of the
Congressional Student Leadership
Conference on Medicine & Healthcare,
a youth leadership conference.
June
9, 2009 - Boston,
MA – High
school students attending
the Congressional
Student Leadership Conference
on Medicine & Healthcare will
get a rare, up-close look at
medical school this summer,
with a Standardized Patient
Clinical Encounter workshop
at Boston College School of
Medicine. The Standardized
Patient Clinical Encounter
is a program generally available
only to first year medical
school students.
Through
a unique partnership with
Boston College School of
Medicine, students attending
the CSLC on Medicine & Healthcare
will participate in a Standardized
Patient Clinical Encounter.
They will interview and examine
actors trained by the Clinical
Skills Center at Boston College
School of Medicine “patients”.
The “patients” are
present various illnesses or
re-enact medical scenarios
to help students learn to take
histories, conduct physical
exams, make diagnoses and communicate
in a caring manner.
Held
on the campus of Bentley
University, the Congressional
Student Leadership Conference
on Medicine & Healthcare
is a 10-day youth leadership
conference for motivated high
school students. The conference
includes interactive, case-based
workshops and hands-on activities.
“We are proud to be
working with Boston College
School of Medicine to bring
graduate-level training to
high school students attending
our youth leadership conferences,” said
Dr. Jan Sikorsky, Director
of Academics for LeadAmerica,
the organization that sponsors
the conference. “Generally,
only first year medical students
have the opportunity to take
part in a Standardized Patient
Clinical Encounter as part
of their medical school training.
We are extremely pleased to
be able to offer a workshop
of this caliber to students
while they are still in high
school.”
Students
attending the CSLC on Medicine & Healthcare
in Boston will also learn to
perform emergency techniques
such as intubation, C-spine
immobilization and CPR, and
will practice those skills
on “SimMan”, an
interactive, technologically
advanced manikin.
The
Congressional Student Leadership
Conference on Medicine & Healthcare
is also offered at Columbia
University in New York, Georgetown
University in Washington DC,
DePaul University in Chicago,
San Diego State University,
and the University of California
at Berkeley.
In
Washington DC, students will
participate in a Robotic
Patient Simulation workshop
at the Georgetown University
School of Nursing and Health
Studies where they will work
a critical care scenario and
practice their skills on ‘GUS’,
a state of the art robotic
patient simulator. In Chicago,
students will spend three days
at Rosalind Franklin University
of Medicine and Science, where
they will participate in interactive,
case-based workshops, hands-on
activities focused on the areas
of histology and gross anatomy,
and explorations into biomedical
research laboratories. Students
attending the conference in
New York will interact with
faculty members and medical
students from Mount Sinai School
of Medicine and participate
in a Standardized Patient Encounter
at the Mount Sinai School of
Medicine Morchand Center for
Clinical Competence.
