WASHINGTON, D.C. - February 3,
2006 - Henry L., a student at Cascade
Middle School in Bend, has been
selected to attend the 2006 National
Junior Leaders Conference, sponsored
by LeadAmerica, at Trinity Washington
University in Washington, D.C.
The NJLC is a leadership program
for promising young leaders from
across the United States and internationally.
Middle school students with a record
of academic achievement, extracurricular
or community involvement are invited
to participate. Henry, who is eleven years old, attends
Cascade Middle School in the mornings,
where he takes Language Arts and Science,
and is home schooled in the afternoon.
During that time he takes Spanish and
Japanese at the Language Institute
of Central Oregon, and Math through
both the Kumon Math and Reading Center
and the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented
Youth Online program (Pre-Algebra).
His extracurricular activities include
playing electric guitar and piano.
He currently plays in a School of Rock
Band with the Cascade Community School
of Music. He is also on the Bend Swim
Club, and has volunteered with his
mother for Empty Bowls to benefit COCAAN.
He and the other
students participating in the conference
select an academic area to study, choosing
from among Government & Politics,
Global Business & Entrepreneurship,
Intelligence, Diplomacy & National
Security, Crime Scene Investigation,
Law & Trial Advocacy, and Medicine & Healthcare.
Or, they may attend Leadership University,
an in-depth, intensive leadership development
conference for young leaders who want
to challenge themselves to excel and
realize their full potential.
Henry has chosen
to study Government & Politics
through LeadAmerica's Congressional
Forum. "I feel happy that I was
chosen to attend the program". "I
am very excited about traveling to
Washington, DC and hope that I will
get to meet one of our Senators or
Representatives." He also hopes
to learn how government works.
By engaging in interactive workshops
and activities, students in the program
learn and develop vital leadership
skills, including effective communication,
conflict resolution, team building
and time management. Through briefings
and discussions with national and international
leaders in the fields of study and
realistic, hands-on simulations, students
experience leadership in action and
learn first-hand about the complexities
of decision-making in a chosen field
or profession.
"Leadership is essential to a
student's future success," says
Chris M. Salamone, Esq., Founder and
Executive Director of LeadAmerica. "It
is the key to what they do with
their lives and how well they do it.
In today's world, it is imperative
that we nurture leadership potential
from a very young age. Leadership can
make important differences in the lives
of teenagers - in their academic and
personal performance, in their acceptance
to the college of their choice, and
in their level of focus, passion and
purpose."
